Nestled in the lovely mountain town of Pinetop is one of the most unexpected and interesting art hikes we've come across. What is an art hike you ask?? Well we just made it up so…..
We’ve traveled full time across the USA for 6 years now and always seek out fun, unique art installations as we travel through the eclectic communities that make up the US. Therefore, by saying what we found in Pinetop was one of the most unique ways we’ve seen a community combine a hiking path with art is impressive. So on to the Trail!

Woodland Lake Trail
Woodland Lake Trail is of course in Woodland Lake Park and is a 1.1 loop trail around the lake on a paved path making it highly accessible.
We started our journey to Woodland Lake Trail from Northwoods Cabins as they have direct access to the trail system right on the property if you stay with them. It was a nice 15 minute walk to the trail and we even saw a family of deer! Once you arrive at the trailhead you cross over a nice bridge (we love walking over bridges!) and you get the first views of the lake. The first thing we noticed was all of the people fishing, as the city keeps it stocked with Rainbow Trout. The next thing we noticed actually took us a second to process. I looked down and saw a line of beautifully painted rocks, so I called Kim over to take a look. That's when I looked up and realized that this line of painted rocks continued alongside the path for as long as I could see! |

Wow! We’ve seen and enjoyed painted rocks before, but never to this extent. As we traveled down the path, alongside a lovely lake with quacking ducks on our left and a seemingly never ending row of painted rocks on our right we didn’t know where to look. Who painted these rocks? And how are there so many!? Well about a ¼ mile in we finally got our answer (kinda). We found a sign that informed us that the painted rock line was actually Sadie the Rock Snake. Sadie was asking everyone to help her grow by adding more painted rocks, and let me tell you, people absolutely were. We continued down the trail both admiring the lake view and bird watching, while constantly finding fun, unique painted rocks and still wondering, how long was this rock snake going to go on for?!
As we got to about the ½ mile mark of the trail we came across the other awesome amenities of the park. From the other parking lot Woodland Lake Park has public use Pickleball Courts, a Playground, Softball Fields, Tennis Courts and Sand Volleyball. Well we didn’t have our pickleball gear with us so back to Sadie the Snake!

Sadie The Rock Snake
As we got to about the ¾ mile marker of the Lake, Sadie finally ended. We had such a great time looking at all of the painted rocks and were wowed by the pure length of it. It was so fun and unique. We definitely found a place in our top 10 most unique public art exhibits (hyperlink) in the US. When visiting Pinetop-Lakeside you definitely need to stop by to take a lovely stroll around the lake and say hi to Sadie, and maybe even leave your own painted rock!
